CHAPTER 26
CLOSER TO FEIN
AVERY ARRIVED at La Dolce Vita at exactly seven. Sheâd had time to change into her favorite low-cut midnight-blue dress, which showed off her cleavage. She toned down the goth makeup, but just a smidge.
âWill someone be joining the lady this evening?â asked a heavyset maître dâ with a thin mustache and even thinner hair.
âYes, my⦠uh, a friend of mine.â Sheâd almost said girlfriend.
Jumping the gun, arenât you? she thought.
The door behind her jingled. Avery turned to see Roz, again dressed in a white button-down shirt, a bolo tie, and a black silk jacket that looked stunning on her.
âYou made it.â Rozâs smile sent shivers of excitement down Averyâs spine.
âI did.â
âI didnât see the Batmobile out there.â
âGothmobile,â Avery corrected. âItâs at the shop. Engineâs been overheating.â
âBummer.â Roz turned to the maître dâ. âTwo for dinner. Reservationâs under Fein.â
The man checked the calendar. âAh, yes. Your table awaits. Right this way, ladies.â
After their server had taken their drinks order, Roz again flashed that million-dollar smile. âSo, whatâs the big secret that you couldnât tell me over the phone?â
Avery drew in a big breath. âRoz, when I was thirteen, my birth father kicked me out of the house.â
Rozâs eyes widened. âWhat a putz! Was it because youâre lesbian?â
Avery wanted more than anything to say it was because she was trans. But again, her courage failed her. âSomething like that.â
âHow horrible! What did you do?â
âLived on the streets for a while. Then me and some other homeless teens squatted in an empty house for a few years until Bobby and his wife, Melissa, took me in.â
âWow, I canât imagine. That mustâve been so scary. What did you do for money?â
Avery stared down at her drink. âWhatever I had to.â
âYeah, you donât have to give me the gory details.â Roz put her warm, gentle hand on Averyâs. âIâm just glad you survived. And now here we are, having a nice dinner together.â
âWhat was it like when you came out?â Avery asked, desperate to change the subject.
A chuckle escaped Roz. âWell, it was a week before my bat mitzvah. I was going into an emotional tailspin. Finally, my folks sat me down to ask me what was wrong. They were afraid Iâd been raped or bullied. When I finally told them, my dad laughed and said he already knew. Being a PI, he didnât miss much. Mom insisted that my being a lesbian didnât mean I didnât have to practice safe sex. My brothers didnât care. Iâd grown up playing football with them. They already considered me a tomboy. â
âIâm glad it went so well. We should all be so lucky.â
âI agree.â
âSo this job offer⦠itâs still⦠valid?â
âIn all fifty states. Avery, I can only imagine the horrible things youâve been through. But let me assure you, I would never judge you for any of it. You are sexy and weirdâin a good wayâand funny and wickedly talented and have awesome taste in music, and I like your mind. And Iâd like to be your girlfriend.
